The questions drivers ask on every call, and why a job order should answer them
Unanswered questions cost you candidates. The list a recruiter needs before the first call, and how to write it once.
Every driver who calls about your position asks the same things. If the recruiter cannot answer, the driver hangs up and calls the next carrier. A job order is where you answer them once.
The six a driver will not skip
- Home time, in plain terms. "Home weekends" means Friday night to Monday morning, or two days out of fourteen? Say which.
- Pay: base, which miles, and what accrues on top. If weekly figures are typical, say so. Drivers who feel misled leave early.
- Route and freight: drop and hook or live? Touch or no touch? Lanes?
- Equipment: truck age, trailer type, ELD, APU, inverter, pets, riders.
- Requirements: CDL class, experience minimum, endorsements, MVR window, what disqualifies.
- Start: orientation location and length, whether travel is paid, first check timing.
Write the answer, not the policy
Drivers want "Two nights out, home Wednesday and Sunday," not "Competitive home time." Every field in our job order asks for a value a recruiter can say out loud on a call.
The questions you cannot answer yet
Mark them. A recruiter who says "I will find out and call you back tomorrow" keeps the candidate. A recruiter who guesses loses them, and you, a week later. Our job order surfaces every blank to you once, and the answer stays.
Decide the edge cases before they are candidates
What is your DUI window? Is a felony an automatic no, or does it depend on the offense and the year? Decide now, in writing. Automated rejections on conviction records carry legal exposure; a written policy and a human review do not.
Two days
Candidates waiting on your approval for an orientation seat take the first date they get elsewhere. Name one person who can say yes within two days, and give them the authority to.
